Berkvens: managing energy within a limited available capacity

The challenge

Berkvens Deursystemen, a manufacturer of doors and installation systems, needed a shared picture of energy use at its plant in Someren. Planning how equipment runs meant taking the available capacity and the connection conditions into account.

The company was looking for data that would point to inefficient consumption and allow better planning of the loads arising from production and from the photovoltaic installation.

The solution

APA deployed the IPOE platform, integrating data from 35 network analysers covering transformers, main connection points and photovoltaic circuits. Communication uses the existing measurement systems and the Ethernet/Modbus network.

The platform provides measurements of active and reactive power, power factor, harmonic distortion and voltage unbalance, among others. The team can analyse how equipment runs in the context of the load on the whole plant.

Results

Access to consumption profiles made it possible to identify inefficient draw, including at night. The data supports the planning of energy-intensive equipment and the management of load within the available connection capacity.

Observing consumption and photovoltaic generation together provides a basis for increasing on-site use of the energy produced. A history of supply parameters makes it easier to analyse disturbances. Energy data can also feed environmental calculations and reporting, given an appropriate methodology and emission factors.

What it means for the plant

IPOE brought scattered measurements together into a tool that supports everyday decisions about consumption and load.
