Silesian University of Technology: energy and water in the dormitories in one system

The challenge

Managing utilities in the dormitories of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice calls for access to energy and water consumption data room by room. The administration needed a tool that would make readings, settlements and the analysis of unusual consumption easier.

The solution

APA deployed the IPOE platform, combining electricity measurements over Modbus with water meter readings over M-Bus. The data goes into a shared panel where consumption can be compared and reports prepared.

Remote access to the readings reduces the need to collect data by hand. The administration gains information that allows it to move from a general utility cost to an analysis of individual rooms.

Results

Reporting supports the settlement of consumption and makes it easier to spot values that depart from the usual profile. In this deployment, monitoring identified a room with unusually high electricity use, which allowed the case to be referred for clarification.

The data also provides a basis for conversations with residents about how energy and water are used. A high reading on its own does not determine the cause, nor does it prove misuse — it is a signal to verify.

What it means for the administration

Bringing the readings together in one system makes day-to-day utility control and the preparation of summaries easier. IPOE provides a shared basis for settlements and for further decisions on running the buildings.
